Rachael Hugo

Rachael was a combat medic attached to the 79th MP CO, which is based right here in Rochester. We did not know Rachael directly, but started sending her care packages when her address was provided to us through our other contacts in the 79th. Rachael was killed in Bayji, Iraq on October 5th, 2007, when insurgents attacked her unit using an improvised explosive device and small arms fire. We attended Rachael’s funeral in her home town of Madison, Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, we were contacted by Rachael’s parents Kermit and Ruth, who despite their loss expressed gratitude for our support of their daughter. In the short time we have known the Hugo’s we have grown extraordinarily close. In fact, we have visited Madison several times at the Hugo’s request in an effort to establish an OHG-similar organization in Madison schools. Kermit and Ruth Hugo have taught my students the true meaning of patriotism and compassion. In return, we have increased our resolve to support deployed troops that protect our way of life and represent our country. We have learned that any soldier we support quickly becomes part of our family regardless of our varied political views. And finally, we have learned that our country and way of life exists today primarily because of the sacrifice of veterans who have answered the call in all of our conflicts.
